Marty Appreciation Post

Marty_Profile.webp

If you know me, you know that part of my identity is my 20-year-old Subaru Legacy, Marty. I gave him that name because when my parents surprised me with him, I was working at Dash's and it was a fish fry day.

A man named Marty called in for an order, and it was the last order that I took that night before I left (I think I had an early shift, and I stayed later than scheduled that day, so I left probably around 6:30).

I laughed at the name "Marty". I told my coworkers that I didn't know real people had that name. I thought it was the funniest thing possible.

I cried when I got my then-18-year-old car. I couldn't believe I had gotten a car.

Marty has been with me through thick and thin. We have had some bumps, and now he is showing his age even more, but he is always there when I need him most, and for that I thank him.

Thank you first cars today, because even if they weren't perfect, they kept you alive and were there when you needed them most.

I Couldn't Help But Wonder

carrie-writing-on-her-laptop-on-satc.avif

Often, I think a routine is the most important thing for me & my nervous system, but I find myself asking more and more: since when did boundaries and routine prioritize over thrill and adventure?

I thrive in my routine, but there is nothing my soul loves more than living with a sense of whimsy. I struggle to find that balance somewhere in the healthy middle ground of going to bed by nine and staying up late with an amazing book. If I go to bed early, I miss out on the story, but if I stay up, I fight to stay awake in class. With the latter, I have to learn that discomfort is the price I have to pay for a fulfilling life.

Maybe the beauty of life is the journey to finding that "in between"- getting lost in the fairytale without falling asleep in pharmacology the next day.

Or maybe the most significant and complicated relationship we have is the one with ourselves and our routines.

I hope you liked my Carrie Bradshaw inspired blog today. I love you all! Allow yourselves to be structured while still giving space for what you love.

Music is Powerful, Man

IMG_0694.jpeg

I can never truly appreciate music until I am attached to my headphones on full blast. I get swept up in the lyrics of a song. It's so easy to sing along to a catchy lyric and dance to the build-up of a brilliant bridge.

Lyrics aren't the only thing that can capture me. Emotion weighs on each note, every harmony, and under any given rhythm. I am more moved by the melancholy of a man and his instrument than I am by any overly produced song.

Music is embedded in every culture. Music is crucial for the soul. Music is made for communities and families. Music is intended for a live audience of thousands in a theater, and also for a couple sharing a dance in their tiny yellow kitchen.

My guilty pleasure in music is classical music. I never need words to understand what feelings are being poured into the pieces. It's so timeless and beautiful; I close my eyes and picture myself dramatically running through a castle or on a sandy beach.

Often, I will get so attached to a song that I listen to it nonstop. I will play the song, and then as soon as it's done, I will restart it and listen to it again. Some songs I can do that forever, while others I get horrendously sick of, and that's when they're retired (until I get in the same cycle a few months later).

I urge you all to create a playlist or two today. I've been meaning to work on some, but haven't had the motivation. If you feel the same, consider this a sign. Feel free to comment some of your playlist names.

Here are some I plan to work on:

80s makeout party

Music I stole from men

Eargasm

Songs that remind me of Obama's presidency

Morning coffee

Give me recommendations if you have them!

Happy Spotlight Sunday!!! Today, I am shining the spotlight on two people very dear to me who have accomplished great things in the last 24 hours. The first picture is of Bekah, who just won Outstanding Soloist! Bekah, I am super proud of you and all your incredible talents!

The second picture is of Katherine, who went on a beautiful hike in Ireland today! Katherine has been my hiking buddy for a while, so even though I am a little bit jealous I couldn't do this hike with you, I  am SUPER excited for you.

Remember, we can have Spotlight Sunday every day. If you are proud of someone, tell them. It makes such a difference for those people to hear that and it is super healthy to communicate your appreciation for those you love.

Thank you for reading MagsThoughts and don't forget to comment! Love you all!

Missing

IMG_8127.jpeg

I'm dog-sitting right now as I have mentioned in some older posts, and I am enjoying "living alone". It's not so scary when there are upstairs neighbors, and a fat cavalier yapping at you for attention. This doesn't mean I don't miss my family. I depend on them for entertainment, companionship, love, and a good laugh. It's hard for me, myself, and I to fill that void, but I have been doing my best to visit them amidst the snowstorm. Yesterday, my car did not start when I went to leave for work. I did my best to keep my cool and call my Dad (because what do you do when you're in crisis- you call your adult Pro Max).

Luckily, the upstairs neighbor heard my struggling and took me to work, which was the sweetest thing anyone has done for me in a while. She could have stayed in the warm inside, but instead devoted her time to helping me. It made my day.

At work, though, I had no vehicle to get home. An hour before I was due to leave, my mom and brother walked in. It was an impromptu gossip sesh that was absolutely divine. The picture above is Tommy doing an impression of my mother with her crossbody bag. I guess the point of this rant, is to enjoy any time with your family possible. Seeing my family for even just an hour before they drove me home flipped my whole day around. I don't think it's bad to miss people. I think it's such a blessing to have people to miss. When you miss someone you learn to appreciate the moments you have with them. I soak up every second with the ones I love and I urge you all to do so as well.

Games on my Phone

IMG_8180.png

I used to play this game religiously. I have no cosmetology bone in my body, as you can see from the photo, but I would LOVE to shave these bitches bald. Toca Boca Hair Salon is like lost media to me. I was talking about it with Riley at work about the funny noises the hair salon clients would make when you had to wash their hair.

I had to redownload to show my coworkers what we were talking about. I don't keep any games on my phone. All I do is doom scroll. Maybe games would be healthier than the fear-mongering online? Do you guys have any games you would recommend? Something to distract me from this dumpster fire country?

WHAT

BREAKING NEWS. IM WATCHING CABLE AS I AM WRITING THIS AND THERE IS A TLC SHOW ABOUT TEEN PREGNANCIES CALLED "UNEXPECTED". IT IS SIMULTANEOUSLY BRILLIANT, HILARIOUS, AND DISGUSTING. OH MY GOSH THESE KIDS ARE FIFTEEN.

IT DOESN'T EVEN LOOK LIKE IT WAS FILMED RECENTLY- THIS IS LIKE AN OLD SHOW.

I'm sorry I am genuinely shocked. I just did some research, and this show started in 2017, which in theory doesn't seem that long ago, but now that I'm thinking about it, that's almost a decade ago.

Alright. I am sleep-deprived and going to pass out to this "girl talk" slumber party sequence where they are trying to figure out if this 15-year-old mom is going make it to homecoming.

Look at the tutorial on Instagram on how to comment for those confused, since the comment section has changed. Much love!

Cable TV

sleepytime tea bear.jpeg

HEYYYYY PARTY PEOPLE. Sorry, I am catching up on my posts. School just started back up, so I am getting used to the new routine. Also, I am dog-sitting this week for my Grandma. The bedroom I'm staying in has cable television, and I feel relieved from my streaming shackles. I wrote my favorite channels on a piece of paper, and I am keeping it on the nightstand. It's so simple and lovely. I still watch crappy TV, but it's up to chance now what I watch, and it helps my indecision.

I think back to when my brothers and I used to fight over the remote. We'd bounce between Cartoon Network, Disney XD, and Boomerang. When commercials would come on, we'd race to the kitchen to grab more Goldfish and juice. Simpler times.

My favorite shows were Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Amazing World of Gumball, Star Wars the Clone Wars, and Tom and Jerry. When I was younger, though, I was a big fan of the Canadian cartoon, Little Bear. It was a low-stimulation animated series that basically embodied the Sleepytime Tea bear. Anyway, comment your favorite childhood shows!

Sunday Scaries

Rober McGinnis _False Scent_.jpeg

Is there a way to overcome the Sunday Scaries?

I actually don't know.

It's a privilege to have something to be anxious about, but it feels so daunting. You always feel like you are forgetting something, or your thoughts are plagued with everything that could go wrong, but you waste so much energy thinking of the "ifs".

I'm trying to focus my energy on what I can control. I'm anxious about getting up in the morning and finding my car covered in a foot of snow, which will make me late. However, I can control getting up with time to spare and letting my car warm up while I get ready. If you shift the narrative of your anxiety to what you have power over, it seems a lot less daunting.

I wish you all good luck in managing any Sunday Scaries you may have (even though it's not Sunday).

Feel free to comment on any ideas of what you think I should cover next! I am open to anything! Also, please note that the comment section has been updated. There is a prompt that says "click here" and that's what you click to comment. I had to rework the comment section because the website told me we were at our limit for comments so this is sort of a loop hole so I don't have to pay. Anyway, love you all! Peace.

Home

IMG_9780.jpeg

What is your definition of home? And what does it look like to you?

My house is important to me. The floorboards creak even when we step the smallest tiptoe, and I've memorized which stairs groan more than other steps. There is an indent in the couch where my Berner, Rosie, sleeps all day. Our fridge is covered in embarrassing school photos and Christmas cards. Speaking of Christmas, my dad's "Christmas Village" stays up at least until February, and he's trying to label it now as a "Winter Wonderland". The Winter Wonderland glows and sparkles when you are up getting water in the middle of the night, and the whole house is asleep. There is no shortage of blankets draped around the couch, always within arm's reach to wrap yourself up in. Our pellet stove hums while it heats our house, and I stare and watch the flames dance behind the glass.

There are so many characteristics that make my house a home, but I believe your home cannot be stationary. My home is my mother who wraps me up in those couch blankets when I'm sick and heats my favorite tea. My home is my father, who tends to the pellet stove to warm the house and keep us toasty. He also warms us up with his thoughtful cooking and bright singing from the kitchen. My home is my little brother, Griffin, who showers at the worst possible times, but charms us at dinner with his hilarious stories. My home is my older brother, Tommy, who stays in his old bedroom once in a while, and I am so grateful to see the light turn on and off from across the hallway because nothing makes me happier than when he is home.

My home is also my dogs who lay at my feet and my cats who sleep on my lap. Being at home with everyone here goes beyond just our house. You could level this house with a bulldozer, but if my family is still here, so is my home.

I hope you all find home within your family, whether it be the people you grew up with or the people you chose as your family. It makes no difference, as long as you have that warm feeling from inside out.

Lazy Day

IMG_8042.jpeg

Today was a lazy day for me. Sometimes when I have days like that, I feel so embarrassed and annoyed that I wasted the day. Often, our body needs that rest, though. Rest can be just as productive as being busy. Being lazy as a pattern isn't healthy, but in moderation, it can be ideal.

Listen to your body. When it tells you to eat, eat. When it tells you to sleep, sleep. You can't be the person you want to be without allowing yourself to fly under the radar once in a while. Embrace the sleep, embrace the hunger, and do what you're told- because your body can't function correctly if your ears are deaf to what it needs.

A Recipe for a Broken Heart

IMG_7920.jpeg

For all my Bills fans, I am so sorry. Though the game may have been rigged (or scripted), your life is not. Do not let a loss of your favorite team or the ending of your childhood show dictate how you live your life. Our lives are not thought out or pre-planned before us. We hold the power to dictate how we go about our day. If you let your anger over something that, in truth, doesn't affect your personal life, to ruin your day, then you are giving it power. Stand up for yourself and write your own script for your story.

To be honest, I caught myself kind of pouting about the outcome of this football game. It is disappointing, but I shouldn't be acting as though my puppy died. Regardless, if this is a loss you cannot brush off, please enjoy this recipe I found on Google.

  • Instructions:

    1. Allow yourself to feel and cry.

    2. Surround yourself with comfort foods and loved ones.

    3. Engage in comforting, slow activities (like cooking).

    4. Get outside at least once a day.

    5. Be patient; healing takes time.

And to the asshole begging for the Bills to lose at the bar today. I will find you, and I will key your car. If you even have one.

Grief manifests in many different ways. :)

I'm Just Winging It

IMG_8001.jpeg

Hello!!!! I hope everyone had a wonderful Friday! I was able to spend the day with my older cousin, Stephen, and it was a complete blast. I accompanied him while he did his rounds visiting our family members. We ended the night with thirty hot wings from Kelly's Corner. What a treat and what great company. I anticipate you all are nice and warm despite the piles of snow. I couldn't stay warm today. Do you know how some people will run warm, and others will run cold? I run cold. I had to sit in a boiling bath just to feel normal. How horrible for me... Anyway, the person who probably needed a relaxing bath more was my brother, Tommy. Throughout all the snow in the last 24 hours, he fought two fires in the city of Buffalo. I don't know if you read these, Tommy, but I hope you know everyone is proud of you. I know I have a lot of you guys reading these the next day, so I have a few questions to pose to maybe start your day on the right note.

What are you most looking forward to today? Are you seeing a friend? Is your mom making your favorite meal?

How are you going to be kind to yourself and others today? Will you accept your imperfections? Will you accept others?

What brings you joy that you can incorporate into your day? Are you going to take time to make your favorite tea? Will you watch one more episode of that guilty pleasure show?

I hope you start this weekend with the confidence that you got the job already, you scored the winning goal, or you just put out two fires in Buffalo.

Good Things Come

Today was great for me and I hope it was for you. I submitted my UB Nursing application today. I am so pleased with myself. I remember this time a year and a half ago, having no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and now my path is so clear. I owe it all to Bekah. Everyone who knows me knows Bekah, and that's what happens when you've been inseparable since you were 3 years old. Last year, during the first couple of weeks of the fall semester, she was taken via mercy flight to the Children's Hospital from Potsdam. I remember not sleeping that night. I remember I was so scared, and I knew my best friend was even more horrified. The uncertainty was devastating. I went to the hospital first thing in the morning, and from there, I knew I wouldn't be able to leave her side. I only went to the necessary classes, and I slept by her, though I rarely could sleep. I stayed awake, often watching her monitor, studying her vitals as if I would be quizzed on them. Bekah, the strongest person I know, the most resilient, and the most loving, even in the toughest of times. I am thankful every day that you are okay and I can see your smiling face. Our sleepovers in the PICU will remain the most legendary. I'm so thankful for you, and I am so excited that chemo is making you the blonde baddie you were meant to be. You really sparked my love of taking care of others. Anyway, the dedication for the blog today is for Beks. I love you always.

Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder

I think it's normal to not feel beautiful all the time. Often, people will claim everyone is beautiful inside and out. Is that true? Or is that to make the collective insecure population feel better? I think beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder, but how can we shift our view so that we agree with others, so that our inner beauty coincides with what your loved ones see on the outside?

There are usually certain moments when you feel beautiful. For me, that was today when I sang along to a horrendous 80s playlist after my shower. I washed my hair, dried it, and put rollers in. It felt fun to pamper myself and enjoy something so simple, but without even meaning to, I caught myself staring at my reflection for a beat longer than normal. The dimples near my mouth deepened in a way that I only see when I make myself laugh, and it made me feel beautiful. This leads me to my next thought: How can I feel like I'm singing and drying my hair like an MTV music video all the time? How can I always feel beautiful?

I think it's not what we do, but how we do it. And I'm not saying you have to dramatically romanticize your life because that doesn't always work. Life is too busy to slow down all the time, light a candle, and sing funny songs. While that may bring you joy (and I am definitely not discouraging you to do that), I think it's the attitude we use towards ourselves, and how we can surround ourselves with people who make us beautiful. So many of you reading (hello, 5 people) are what make me feel so beautiful. I hope I make you feel beautiful, too.

Surround yourself with people who make your dimples go deeper.

If you feel comfortable, leave a comment down below (thanks, Ryan, for adding that) and share when you feel the most beautiful!

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM!

HELLO MAGGOTS!!! WELCOME TO ANOTHER DAY IN THE BLOG. Today was a great day. I had a productive morning and celebrated with Mooney's Mac and Cheese with Ryan. Service was excellent, and the food might be on my top ten death row meals. Also included on that list is Curry's Stuffed Banana Pepper Soup and La Divina Tacos. Speaking of La Divina- I met my lovely coworkers at La Divina, whom I am incredibly thankful to have. I was just telling someone today how remarkable it is to work in such an amazing environment with such beautiful people. Unfortunately, I didn't eat anything at La Divina, which broke me a little inside because I had a late lunch, but the ambiance alone made my heart soar. After tacos, we went to bowl at Tonawanda Lanes. My gorgeous friend Riley did an EXTRAORDINARY job bowling. She started off the first game with the worst score and ended with the very best. Meanwhile, I was regressing in my bowling skills lol. I am always in awe of you, Riley, and thank you for driving me to and fro. Thanks for reading my blog. Talk tomorrow!
